My Friends
BLESSED BEGINNINGS -OUR WORLD EMERGES
April 2000 One desparate situation -one phone call owner had 3 x14 week old kittens-absolutely NO-ONE wanted them
Their live and future were in my hands. Could I help these lost souls? Unable ( and unwilling) to say NO i went to Paeroa and collected them
Rescued , love and spoilt! The future of many unwanted lives changed - for 90% of our animals we are the last hope
(the bottom of the cliff-so to speak) They come into our care (for them we are half way to home)
Reflecting on that moment in time I just wanted to say no- this is not a good timing and definitely not a good time for this too happen! I just felt for those animals - how lost and deserted they were ( and how lost i was )
Our worlds simply collided-the unit was destined to be born
despite everything!
So i jumped in furry boots and all. Right smack in the deep end.
Choosing a name took months -lasting only 6 months before shortening as the public saw Thames and thought they knew exactly who we were !
Abbreviating the full name to Animal Rescue Thames shifted a lot of the confusion we had created!
The first nine months 95% was personally funded by myself -food, vet care and treatment threatened to cripple me
To alleviate this furrball we asked for donations when rehoming-80% responded generously the rest(who could afford it) gave $2 or $5
Donation firmly became $20 or cost of desexing This made a huge impact and after the first garage sale -raising $1300 Rescue stood for the first time on her own.
Year one was raising money and public awareness we were independant and unique Battling against all odds we cruised into year 2 and took the plunge- Pet Expo in Hamilton a huge effort and expoerience! Placing overall 2nd in display our reward ! More fundrasing followed and the November Christmas raffles continued their successful trend
Year 3 rocked our foundations sending us into crisis-34 cats-$300 (I queried my mission of compassion-what the heck was i trying to do) With nothing else to help us I prayed - God answered our cry 2 generous donations $100 and $1000 saw us break through again and go onward and upward.
Christmas 2003 was the most impacting fundraising we have ever done and the public support was incredible
Finally after 3 years we broke through the attitude of who we were ! People recognised us as independant and that there is hope for the homeless - the unwanteds , the ferals ,the orphans and furry things in crisis. this too brought its own share of problems -SIMPLY MORE- more food, more accommodation needs , more vet care and MORE fundaising !
(and more abuse when we reached capacity !)
For our animals we purchase 95% of our food - fundraising and donations are our lifeline- WE are the animals
